FW-17 Marie Inspiration
The Marie collection symbolizes the woman that has persevered much and has pressed on. The only fabric used in this collection is a dark plum colored silk. Much like how silk is made, this woman gives much of herself. To produce silk, silkworms form silk cocoons around themselves and are then boiled for the silk worm to dissolve so a beautiful silk can be produced from their journey. The Marie collection highlights a woman that never dissolves or forgets what makes them who they are because so many beautiful things are produced from her.
..Do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them. -Deuteronomy 4:9
Marie is my mother.
She’s a beautiful woman originally from Haiti who helped shape me into the woman and person I am continuously becoming. Apart from her inner and outer beauty, one thing that I really admire about her is how selfless she is. To be able to claim a woman as ‘mom’ who takes her roles as a wife, mother, and woman contributing to society as important and of a quality work is a bragging right. As amazing as she is she looks at her creations, her children, as a wonder and her own bragging right.
She wanted us to know about her country and the sacrifices she made because they would impact the way we live out our own lives. She wanted us to know that we came from a place of lush greenery and beautiful oceans. She wanted us to know that we came from the first independent black nation in the world and the first to end slavery completely in the Western Hemisphere. She wanted us to know that family is important and so were our dreams.
This collection, as a part of my dream, is dedicated to her. A woman as delicate, as refined, and as strong as silk.
